The 2016 rendition of Firepit opens with oodles of blackberry, peppercorn, and cinnamon spice, in addition to aromas of dried grass and late summer lawn clippings. Smooth, velvety tannins and mouth-watering acidity complement the rich flavors of black plum, blueberry, clove, and baker’s chocolate on the palate. That taste of blackberry returns for a long finish. We crafted two separate blends of Firepit in vintage 2016; this release, in the traditional windswept vine label of the Crown Block vineyard, features the time-honored blend that begins with at least 50% Old Vine Merlot to provide soft tannins and ends with a dose of Petite Sirah to intensify the dark fruits. In 2020 we will release the more structured Cab-based blend with a new label depicting the actual firepit in action on an evening that wasn’t a spare-the-air day.
Ready to drink now, but will evolve with proper cellaring through 2024.
