Darcie’s original wine – first produced in 1996. These mature, low-yielding vines run north to south yet tilt to the west with a shallow red clay soil and persistent breeze that forms the ideal combination for growing world-class Merlot. We painstakingly hand-sort every cluster and grape that goes into our open top fermenter to eliminate green stems that can cause bitterness in the final wine.
The release of the 2016 Old Vine Merlot commemorates twenty years of making wine from this exceptional Merlot vineyard. Vibrant ruby in color and redolent of black cherry, beetroot and glazed cinnamon roll, these notes deepen on the palette, which has a darker spice character than previous vintages. Expect to encounter meatiness, tobacco leaf, and lingering mulling spice, as well as even more black cherry. Merlot lovers will appreciate its silky mouthfeel, with just enough acidity to make the fruit flavors pop. It’s suppleness keeps its grippy tannins in check. Cellar through 2024 to let its tannic and spicebox characters evolve.
